Soil carbon sequestration

Offset emissions by fixing carbon in the vineyard.

The vineyard can offset part of its emissions by fixing carbon in soil and perennial biomass. Cover crops, compost, hedges and less tillage raise organic matter — a real sink, if slow and reversible.

At the same time, these practices reduce the need for synthetic nitrogen, cutting emissions too. It is the bridge between the carbon footprint and regenerative viticulture; measuring organic matter over years is what underpins the claims.

Can sequestration zero out the footprint?

Rarely in full, but it offsets a real part. It is most robust when combined with reductions in the other sources.

Is soil carbon permanent?

It is reversible: aggressive tillage can release it. That is why reduced tillage and continued measurement are essential.
